This set of DIY painted ornaments are inspired by the Old World, hand made, blown glass ornaments made in Germany during the 1920's and 1930's. The back of the packaging includes the history of these wonderful works of art. My fabulous husband who is a history teacher researched and wrote this! These ornaments are inspired by some of our favorites in our collection. (read below)
Our paint by numbers kits are created from paper designed for paint mounted on a sturdy chipboard backing just like a vintage paint by numbers kit. We use the classic blue lines which are easy on the eyes and a nod to the history of paint by number kits. This kit was designed and produced by me, an art teacher, in Nashville, Tennessee.
Thank you purchasing our Old World Christmas Paint by Number Ornaments kit! This kit was inspired by the glass artisans located in the village of Lauscha, Germany, located deep in the Thuringian Forest. For over a hundred years these artisans have designed whimsical molds with which they have blown delicate figural glass christbaumschmuck (ornaments), silvered their insides with a silver and sugar solution, then hand-painted their outsides. The whole process occurred in their individual homes; literally a cottage industry! This tradition endured even during the Cold War, when the artisans found themselves ten miles inside communist East Germany; they would create ornaments in the day then hike them at night to Coburg, West Germany, where they would trade them for food and supplies.
This kit was similarly designed and produced by hand in a Tudor-cottage in East Nashville. We are honored to be a part of an industry that, like the glassblowers of Lauscha, prides itself on giving the customer a fun and high-quality product to enjoy any time of year.
Fun Fact: Did you know that the Christmas tree skirt originated out of necessity? A long-enduring tradition in Germany is to light candles on the tree on Christmas Eve and sing carols around the tree. Homemade tree skirts were created to protect the floors from dripping candle wax!
